On February 9th, 2012, a tragic accident left Greg’s sister paralyzed from the chest down. She was 32 weeks pregnant at the time. Doctors delivered her blue-eyed baby boy, Logan, by emergency C-section that same day. But they kept Greg’s sister sedated and in surgery for the next few days. Her troubles were only just beginning.
Greg’s sister, Marcella, could no longer work at Avalon Storage. She’d been there for years, but that was over. Now she couldn’t move her body. Now she had to juggle a new infant, rehabilitation, overwhelming medical bills, and an uncertain future. “It took all my energy just to breathe some days,” she said in an interview with the Record Searchlight. Her house also required a massive remodel. It wasn’t built with handicap accessibility in mind. Faced with the crushing reality of her new situation, she didn’t know how she would go on.
That’s when it happened—an experience that would change the Wagner family forever. News outlets across the nation, like Glamour Magazine and the New York Times, got hold of Marcella’s story. The response was overwhelming. The interview with the Record Searchlight summed it up well: “Since news of Wagner’s injury broke in February, members of the community have donated thousands to a fund set up by her siblings for the remodel, and scads of local businesses and groups also have put on fundraisers for the family. Some have made them baby clothes and donated other items, and others have just sent cards and well wishes.”
The Redding community came out to support not only Marcella but also the rest of the Wagners. Everyone stepped up: RA Martin Excavators, Tugwell Roofing, Jeterbuilt Construction, RMC Refrigeration, and the one-man-wrecking-crew, Tim Sheahy. They rebuilt Marcella’s entire house. They gave her a home in which to continue her rehabilitation, raise her baby, and unearth the new life which lay in front of her. “I couldn’t be more grateful,” Greg said in a later interview, “to them and the community of Redding for taking care of all of us and treating us like family. This is a community we are happy and proud to be a part of.” Since that outpouring of support, the Wagners have made it their mission to respond in kind. They moved from Silicon Valley to raise a family. They never could have known their family would expand to include all the people of Redding. And they never could have guessed how much fuller their lives would be for it.
